Fun Christmas Crafts for Kids

By Joy J. Fine

It is time to begin finding Christmas crafts for kids to make to decorate their home, classroom or the tree. This is a fun time for children as they enjoy making things to help decorate for the upcoming celebration.  There are always the standard things that kids can make like toilet roll snowmen, Christmas tree cut outs, popcorn strings for the tree or cotton ball snow but maybe this year it would be more interesting for them if they could make some different decorations.  To find these new ones there are many websites on the Internet that you can visit. Some of them will have craft ideas while others will have printouts that can be printed, cut and made into interesting decorations.

One fun decoration is the handprint and footprint reindeer. This one is easy and the result will be great. Have your child trace both their footprint and their handprint with fingers splayed. Once they are traced they need to be cut out. Then attach the hands to the top of the foot.  Once this is done your child should put a face on the reindeer and decorate it any way they want. This would look great hanging from the tree, the mantle place or in the child’s bedroom.

Another favorite of the Christmas crafts for kids is decorating their own Christmas stocking.  You will want to let them put just about anything on it that is appropriate to the season. Some kids like to put their names on the front while others want to stick on Christmas trees, snowmen or snowflakes. This can be done using felt stickers, which can later be removed so the stocking can be redone next year, or if it is permanent glue sticks would work.  One option that can be fun for your child is to let them put something small on the stocking and then add a little something every year.  This would be lovely to look back on when they are grown and see how their stocking decorations slow
ly grew.

For those who want some decorations that reflect the religious aspect of the holiday one option is to have them make the nativity star. This can be done using yellow paper and gold ribbon to hang it on the tree. Or they could make the nativity scene by drawing it, using paper mache or making the figures out of homemade play dough.

How about making some Christmas crafts for kids that they can start early to get ready for the holiday spirit? This could include a countdown banner.  This banner, which should be started no earlier than the first of December, would be something they could have on their wall or bedroom door and each day they could take one thing off of it until it is empty on Christmas day.  They could stick on snowmen, candles, trees or anything else that represent Christmas to your family.  Or they can put a new item on the banner each day ending with a bigger picture when they reach Christmas day. No matter which crafts you chose for your child to make they will enjoy being able to help you decorate their home for the upcoming joyous season.
